Peebles is seen as small rural village unchanged perhaps since late mediaeval times. The most dramatic development, which over the next few years will change the town for ever, has been the recent arrival of the railway. It has become a junction town with not one, but three lines and two stations. The next decades will transform the community from a sleepy village with a minute wauk mill into a major woollen goods manufacturing centre, commuter town and national spa.
