The map shows Sheffield as the major commercial and social centre of the area. Industry is evident but restricted to the Don valley in the north and along the banks of the Sheaf in the east, but the main town has been relatively spared the ravages of the early unplanned industrialisation. Indeed it looks a pleasant and organised town, particularly to the west with its wealthy villas and gardens. Also to the west are the recently built reservoirs so essential to the developing awareness of sanitation and health management of the time as well as the future expansion of the metals industry in the area.
