The map shows Sunderland developing as an important industrial centre and major port, the river is lined with shipbuilding yards and works of all descriptions, and the harbour is dominated by the large South Dock with its two tidal basins to the sea. The main function of the port is clearly evident with the numerous coal drops fed by rail and wagon ways from the mines of the surrounding Durham coalfield. Also evident is the early village pattern of the old town running east to west along High Street which has been swamped by the grid pattern of contemporary terraced housing which later forces moulded the modern pattern of the town into its north south axis of Fawcett Street.
