The map shows Durham hardly any larger than its medieval origin and only recently, and marginally, touched by industrialisation of railway and mining. Three collieries are seen within walking distance of the famous cathedral and the main London to Edinburgh line skirts the town to the west. Also seen is a now long defunct local line serving a small station on Gillesgate. It looks a quiet, quaint and picturesque town establishing a character which has prevailed to this day.
