The map shows Leeds as a turbulent jumble of unplanned chaotic industrial ribbon development fed by railway and canal. Just discernable is the “village” origin of the city along the north south axis of Briggate at the crossroads of the old highways then, as now, named as Kirkstall, Dewsbury, York and Woodhouse Roads. Also evident is the general north south split of the town with the higher area to the north, suffering less of the fumes and stench of Victorian industry, developing as mostly “better class” residential suburbs, and the southern half bearing works, mills, railways and of course the poorer housing.
