The map shows Newcastle already as a vibrant close-knit commercial and industrial town. Coal mines are being worked close to the centre, the river is lined with factories, works and shipyards. In contrast, Gateshead still bears the shape of its medieval one street village origins. The railway has recently brought major developments in the shape of the still magnificent main station (next to the cattle market!), the High Level Bridge, the first of Newcastle’s famous high bridges, and the large workshops on the Gateshead side of the river. Despite its dense Victorian unplanned “clutter”, the town is surrounded by open field and parkland with the Town Moor to the north, Elswick Hall estate to the west and Jesmond Dene to the east, most of which is mercifully intact to this day.
