Bradford 1849 is revealed as a relatively small compact working town with obviously well developed industries at such an early date in the industrial revolution. Several large worsted mills are evident at the edge of town and many coal and ironstone pits are to be found to the south and east which undoubtedly fed the nearby giant Bowling Iron Works. An indication to the importance and prosperity of the town is the size and number of the railway stations of the town, three large terminus stations lie within five hundred yards of each other, two with extensive sidings and depots. The bustle and smell of the inevitable horse transportation around these stations can only be imagined. On the edge of the industrial grime and labour a more genteel Victorian life is seen in the number of gentlemen‚s houses set within parkland to the north and west of the town at a safe distance of the noxious fumes of the mills and works. Intellectual graft and sensibility was also to be found in the prestigious Airedale College amid the trees on the north turnpike road to Harrogate.
